Chapter Thirteen
Delux’ pulled the comforter over Kima’s nakedness and began searching the floor for his boxer shorts. The early morning sun peeked through the room’s window, but the room was still dark.
He finally found his boxers and slipped on his jeans on the way to the door. He met up with Big Ma in the kitchen.
“What’s up, grandma?”
She had knocked on his door about three minutes earlier.
“Delux’, are you using protection?”
Delux’ smiled slyly. Big Ma’s question didn’t surprise him; she had been talking to him about sex ever since she had caught him examining a young girl’s breast when he was thirteen.
“You don’t want no grandbabies, grandma?” he asked, still smiling.
“Of course I do, baby; but I want the mommas to be goal-oriented and able minded. Most of the girls that cross my door ain’t looking passed the buildings in this neighborhood.”
She tilted her flask to her lips and continued.
“I want you to have a woman that can take care of you; show you things outside of the ghetto. These girls now days wear shirts that say, “GHETTO FABALOUS’ and they think it’s good here. Delux’, you special; don’t let your surroundings take you under…”
Delux’ stepped forward and hugged his grandmother. “Every thing gonna be good, grandma. I protect myself from the ones you’re talking ‘bout.”
“And Kima?” she questioned.
He looked at her shocked. “How you know who I got back there?”
“I’m old, not blind; besides she’s the loudest one,” Big Ma said smiling.
He knew his grandmother had asked about Kima because she was good friends with her grandmother; they were drinking buddies. He knew his grandmother would feel awkward around Miss Betty knowing her granddaughter had gotten pregnant in her house.
“Everything gonna be alright, grandma. I’m doing the right thing.”
“I hope so. I know ya momma got you on a mission. But remember, it’s easy for the general to give the order to go to war, but it is the soldier who can see the frontline most clearly.”
“Well, lucky I’m a general.”
Big Ma tilted her flask to her lips again and stared at him with those dark red orbs.
“Maybe. But what’s ya rank? You betta count your stars. My first male grandchild was just like you—your Uncle Ike. He wasn’t as clever as you, but he was bad. He still looked so young when we buried him.”
Delux’ stared at her for a long moment before he walked back in his room. Kima was out of bed, standing nude at the window staring out. He walked up behind her and grabbed her waist with both hands.
“Am I ya girl? I mean…what am I to you? Just some pussy? What!” Kima asked as she felt the heat of his palms warm her body.
He turned her so that she was facing him and stared into her light brown eyes.
“You my friend. A real good friend; a special friend.”
She sucked her teeth. “What makes me more special than any of the other bitches you bring here to fuck?” she said, pushing him and going back to the bed.
